Saying Yes To The Chunky Boot Trend
If there's one thing these lockdowns are good for (we're currently on lockdown #5 here in Melbourne), it's catching up on life admin and work. These photos have sat unedited on my SD card for about 3 months now. So, I'm so glad to finally have the time to share them with you as well as my thoughts on this season's chunky boot trend.
Considering the Trend
If you've followed me here for a while, you'll know my fashion style isn't trend-driven. I like to find classic, timeless pieces in neutral shades that will stand the test of time. And I'm not opposed to paying a little more to ensure a higher quality – for me, it's all about cost per wear. So when this chunky boot trend came about, I sat on it for quite a few months before I bought into it. I'm talking screenshotting photos from Instagram, window shopping online and trying on various styles in different stores. When it finally came to the point where I had decided that these boots would (a) suit my style, (b) work perfectly with a fair few outfits in my wardrobe and (c) be something that I would wear for a few years to come, I decided to go for the Cam style by Alias Mae.
When it comes to shoes, I'm not one to heavily invest. Don't get me wrong, I will still always opt for quality and if they're under $150 it's probably going to be a no (unless they're
something simple like a sandal) but what I mean is that I'm probably not going to opt for a designer shoe.
This particular style of chunky boot was heavily influenced by Bottega Veneta's Lug boot. And while I love the original version and the craftsmanship looks absolutely incredible, I know myself; shoes aren't something I take great care of. Designer bags? Sure! I hide them from the rain under my jacket, I sit them on chairs at cafes, never on the ground, and I always store them in their dust bags. But with shoes, even though I do store them in their dust bags and boxes, I end up accidentally stepping in puddles or scuffing them as I walk, or slipping off sneakers (who has time to untie shoelaces?!) I've only just started getting into cleaning and polishing my leather shoes! So when it came to buying into this trend, I knew that for me, Alias Mae's price point and quality was the right choice for me.
How to Style A Chunky Boot
One of my reservations about this trend was that maybethey were a bit too chunky for me. Having an hourglass figure and being on the shorter side, sometimes I find trends are more suited to those that are taller and slimmer. Would these just make me look a little stubby? But with this trend, I have found that pulling it off has been down to the way I have styled them.
My favourite way to style these boots so far has been with these faded black jeans from Abrand, a black fitted top and an oversized coat. These boots are quite edgy and I feel like
this outfit complements this well while still remaining true to my style. Since introducing these boots into my wardrobe, I have found that an oversized, long coat or trench really helps to balance out the chunkiness of the boots. There's heavier, oversized aspects to both my bottom and top half, while the jeans and fitted top give me shape. Another way I have loved styling these is with this tapered knitted pant from Camilla and Marc. Because these are quite fitted to the leg, without being skin-tight, these tuck into the tops of my boots nicely, for a bit more of a cleaner, slimline look.
