My Favourite White Button Down Shirt

Reinventing a Classic

There’s no denying that the white button down shirt is a definite wardrobe staple. Whether it be dressed up for an everyday workwear look, or paired back with blue jeans and a crossbody bag for your weekend brunch date, the white button down shirt is a versatile piece.

When it comes to selecting a white shirt for my wardrobe, I tend to stray away from the boring, slightly stiff classic option, instead opting for something a little more unique. I love an oversized white shirt in a lighter, softer fabric; there's just something about the way it sits when tucked into my jeans or trousers that is so flattering – and of course comfortable! I have a few white shirts in my wardrobe; one is from Nobody Denim and has flared oversized cuffs with statement tortoiseshell buttons. Another is by C/meo Collective and features a cut out back with a tie detail around the front. I like to look for any detail that makes the shirt unconventional and, in my opinion, more stylish.

Enter Aje

But more recently, I've been adding a few staple pieces to my wardrobe that are made to last. During Aje's huge sale, I bought their Overture Button-Down Shirt – I have always found Aje clothing to be of good quality, with particular attention to detail. This shirt features a double collar, double buttons and neutral toned Aje embroidery at the nape of the neck. I'm wearing a size 6 and I find it's quite an oversized fit – it's also pretty long so I may get it taken up. But I love the versatile nature of this shirt. It's beautiful enough to wear on its own – when you get to the office and the heating is blasting – but also looks great layered under coats. The material is thin – so layering over Uniqlo's heat-tech tops might be necessary – but super soft; it feels so comfortable to wear and not at all stiff or restricting.

I've styled it with a pair of black wide leg trousers and heeled boots (a closed toe shoe is a must in Melbourne right now but this outfit would probably look even more chic with an open toe black heel!) I've also layered my chunky Aje necklace and Dylan Kain belt to add further detail to the look.

I've put together a selection of my favourite white button down shirts at the moment. Aje are really killing it right now, so I've made sure to include quite a few by them:
