Introducing Colour to my Wardrobe

It's all About The Neutrals

If you're here because you thought I'd finally taken the plunge and introduced the colour of mint green to my wardrobe, well, I'm sorry to disappoint.

Over the years, my style has changed dramatically. What was once a chaotic vintage-inspired wardrobe has now evolved into a carefully curated collection of classic, minimal designs in mostly black, white and grey. 

For me, colour has become somewhat of a sore point. I'm happy to sport the occasional blue denim or deep khaki (obviously not together), but aside from that, I keep colour at arms length. I often find myself asking: is it too bold? Will it wash me and my fair skin tone out? Does it work with my dark golden blonde hair? 

But recently, I've found myself ignoring my internal monologue, venturing out of my comfort zone and gravitating towards more neutral tones.

In a true resurgence of 70s fashion, earthy tones – think brown, beige, cinnamon, rust and tan – have dominated fashion trends for the last few years. International designer Jacquemus was one of the first to make brown cool again with oversized structured blazers, tight mini dresses and knitted polos. Closer to home, Anna Quan churned out tailored co-ords and classic trench coats in the tones. And so too did Oroton.

Having a wardrobe that mostly consists of black, white and grey, the rise of brown and beige piqued my interest. Instagram began being flooded with tonal #ootds; head to toe looks of all beige or tan, and somehow it just worked. I began to appreciate how the warmer tones added depth to an outfit, almost bringing a monochrome look to life. And while I don't think I will be sporting a head to toe beige look anytime soon, I will be introducing pops of brown and tan to my outfits.
