Setting Goals for 2019

2018 was a bit of a blur. I graduated from university, I went to three Australian fashion weeks, I worked way too many jobs at once, I made new friends, I worked with some incredible brands, and I took a much needed holiday to Vietnam with my boyfriend.

In 2019, my main goal is simply to work less. For as long as I can remember I have worked 15+ hour days. I’m an extremely hardworking and determined person and I know nothing happens without hard work, but since going on holiday and not working every day I’ve realised how important it is to make time for yourself and your loved ones.

I’m not one to make New Year’s resolutions, partly because I’m terrified of failure, and partly because my goals are forever changing due to the nature of my industry. But this year, I’ve decided to set myself some goals completely unrelated to my career, to make sure I’m living life as well as working hard for my future.

#1 Read a new book once a month

I absolutely love reading, both fiction and non-fiction, and in recent years I’ve really gotten into books about business, entrepreneurial women and self development. But no matter how many books I buy (I would have over 30 sitting in my room, all unread) I never find the time to read – it’s definitely not something that I prioritise. So to change this, my goal is to read for 30 minutes before bed each night (so far I’ve found that this has stretched to an hour because I couldn’t put the book down!) At the top of my list are:

After You – Jojo Moyes (I just finished Me Before You and I can’t wait to read what happens next. Safe to say the first one left me sobbing).

You Do You – Sarah Knight (I have three of Sarah’s bestselling self development books and after reading raving reviews about how hilarious and helpful she is, I can’t wait to make a start. This is definitely long overdue).

World Of Style – Aimee Song (One of my favourite bloggers – she always gives a truthful insight into the industry and after reading her first book Capture Your Style, I can’t wait to see what she discusses in this one).

Rise & Resist: How To Change The World – Clare Press (Last year I helped organise Clare’s Adelaide book launch while I was at Clique. After listening to her speak about it, I think this will be both utterly insightful and a little confronting. But slow fashion is definitely something I’m passionate about, so I can’t wait to read what she has to say).

#2 Dedicate more time to The Editor’s Style

Slowly my blog has gone from my hobby and passion to something I HAVE to do − largely due to not having enough time in a day! I want to re-focus and start creating content I’m happy with rather than just getting something out there to keep Instagram happy.

My goal for this year is to prioritise my blog; allow myself to sit in a coffee shop with my laptop and just write, or organise a photoshoot and not feel pressured with a time limit − for me, that can really kill creativity. Which leads to my next resolution…

#3 Have some down time

As I said before, over-working is something I am very guilty of. I don’t regret it − I’m very proud of all my achievements and how far I’ve come − but it’s definitely time to settle into a full-time job and minimise the amount of freelance work I do after hours. This year I will be focussing on stopping work when it hits 8pm and having the rest of the night to relax and do whatever I feel like! As for weekends…I seriously need to stop working on weekends!

#4 Go to the gym four times a week

Towards the end of last year I began to focus more on my health, and made an effort to get to the gym (I even went to the gym while I was holiday in Vietnam!) I’ve started to notice results in my fitness and energy levels and I’m feeling much more motivated to go. But while in my usual routine of working, I often make excuses and feel that I’m too tired or busy to get to the gym.

So this year, I’m going to change the way I think about it. Going to the gym will be a non-negotiable. I’ll force myself to go at least four times a week and keep myself accountable by checking these off in my diary (and going with someone else).

#5 Listen to two podcasts a week

Towards the end of 2018 I discovered podcasts. I know they’ve been around for quite a while and I often saw them pop up on Instagram but like reading, I saw it as something I didn’t have to do (unlike the pile of work on my desk). But once I started listening to them at home, on a train in Vietnam, I realised that it’s A) possible to do something else while listening to them, like scheduling Instagram, and B) that they’re incredibly insightful and I was really enjoying listening to them. I now have my favourites that I catch up on (blog post coming soon!) but I’m constantly finding new ones as well.

#6 Get eight hours of sleep a night

To have 8 hours of sleep is something I reserve for weekends, and even then that doesn’t always happen. This year I really want to focus on my health (it would be amazing to not constantly feel tired!) Like most people, I’m much more productive after a good night’s sleep and so by allowing myself the eight hours, I’m hoping I can work much more efficiently than I have this year.

I’m also going to be stricter with myself when it comes to my phone − once I get into bed it needs to be on charge and out of reach.

#7  Get outside my comfort zone

Finally, my last goal is to push myself and do things I wouldn’t usually do. I finally feel ready to step outside the bubble of Adelaide and take on new things and achieve and do more with my life. Watch this space!
